Interesting site. We lived somewhat parallel lives--but about 30 years apart. I have kids your age.

I knew/know Chaminade very well, having grown up in (what was then West) Hollywood. I graduated from McArthur in 1964. After a year and a half at (then) JCBC, I transferred to the Aviation program at (then) Miami-Dade Junior College (back when it was the venerable Dade County). I graduated in 1967, and less than a year later was hired by the FAA.

I started in ZJX, was there five years, then went to ORD, where my stay was much shorter. After a few months I wound up at ZAU, where I spent 25 years. I retired almost 11 years ago (as of the date of this post).

I saw it all, including 22 months on the street in 1981/'82-'83. I'm glad I left when I did, I had a good career (world's greatest video game, I tell people), but I would never recommend that anyone pursue the career. The FAA poisoned the well many years ago, and I don't think it's possible to recover--not in the lifetime of anyone already born, at least.

If you know oldtimers at ZAU, they may remember my nick.

You have done a great job with this sight. I will be selling my books and speaking at the patco convention in Memphis on the 17-18 of may 2008.I have always admired air traffic controllers. I have been a fighter pilot in the USAF, and an airline captain for usair for 28 years.A few years ago I obtained my mechanicks A_P license.I firmly believe that the job of controlling traffic is something that I would like to do,but I doubt that I could ever hack the program. Back in 1981 I refused to fly ,because the skies were un safe . My airline grounded me. Please visit my sight www.brianpowerwaters.com

Humph. Someone has to force me to read this post. It's too big and boring. Brevity is the sister of talent, remember that.
